Bridgecare

The Facts

Each day, across Brisbane, thousands of people face hardship that no one should endure alone. At Bridgecare, we see the faces behind the statistics. Below are the facts that drive our mission.

People are going hungry in our city

  • In Queensland, rising costs of rent, energy, food and health outpace income growth, pushing many low-income households into deeper financial stress. ABC

  • Nationally, about 3 million Australians are estimated to be at risk of homelessness—meaning just one setback (job loss, illness, inflation) can push them over the edge. Homelessness Australia+1

  • For many, hunger is a daily reality. When people cannot afford even basic pantry essentials, they must choose between food, utilities or rent. (This is a lived reality in many of our Brisbane neighbourhoods.)

Bridgecare’s food hampers meet an urgent and growing need in our own communities.

1 in 6 Aussie adults experienced food insecurity in the past year.

Homelessness is more than
“sleeping on the street”

  • On Census night 2021, over 122,000 people nationally were estimated to be experiencing homelessness — the highest number recorded to date. Australian Bureau of Statistics

  • Homelessness includes a variety of situations: living in overcrowded dwellings, staying temporarily with others, or in unsustainable housing situations — not only sleeping rough. Australian Bureau of Statistics

  • By 2023–24, specialist homelessness services in Australia supported around 280,000 clients — a reflection of rising demand. AIHW

  • In Greater Brisbane alone, approximately 1,377 people are estimated to be experiencing homelessness. The Salvation Army Australia

Bridgecare’s Streetlight program, community teams, and relational support work to reach people often locked in survival mode.

Compassion and education change the journey

  • Serious illness brings more than physical pain — it can lead to financial stress, isolation, and emotional exhaustion, especially during chemotherapy.
  • At the same time, many in our community are struggling with life skills, parenting, budgeting, and confidence to rebuild after crisis.
  • Access to coaching, courses, and care packs can make the difference between surviving and thriving — restoring dignity and connection when people need it most.
  •

Bridgecare, bridging the gap

While government and large systems are essential, many people fall through cracks—especially those with complex or overlapping needs.

Bridgecare offers practical aid + relational presence + equipping support, responding to each person’s story, not just their deficit.

Behind every statistic is a person with dignity, hope and potential—and we serve because they matter.
